Stop Motion

For the past 3 weeks we had been set the challenge to make a 15 second stop motion film which represented an emotion which we had been given. The reasoning behind this task was to help us broaden our skills and also to give us an insight into what else we could for our FMP.

During the first week we had to come up with an idea for our stop motion films. The emotion in which film had to represent was fear. For inspiration I went on to youtube and watched multiple short stop motion films that related to my emotion. There were many on there which gave me many ideas for mine.

While deciding on what to do, I also had to think about what materials I was going to use to create my film. These could include paper, the whiteboard, clay and many more materials. I decided to use paper for mine. I decided to use paper because i thought this would allow me to my film in a more simpler way. I knew that it would take quite a bit of preparation because of all the different pieces that I would need.

To help with the planning we had to do a storyboard. I ended up doing a very simple storyboard. I put down the main parts of the story and as i was confident with my idea I knew that i did not need to storyboard every bit of it. Below is my storyboard that i completed. The drawings are not very good but they still appear clear to me which is the main point.

Once i had made my storyboard i was very clear with my idea and how i would go about when filming it.

I finished taking all the pictures in the second week. This then left me a week to edit them all together and gather up all the sounds i wanted to add. I added simple sounds that I believed helped to bring the stop motion more to life. They allowed it to be more realistic and believable.

Evaluation-

Overall I was happy with the result as it looked just like I had wanted. All the photos were taking with the camera staying in the same position which made the outcome more better. There were a few things that if I was going to make another stop motion, I would reconsider. Some of the photos came out brighter or darker than others which really affected the outcome. Also, as I used pencils to create my drawings, the colours sometimes did not appear very bold which could lead the viewer guessing what is being shown. So in future I would make sure that I was using pens or something that made the drawings stand put more. Lastly I would also put more thought into the story line and try and make the narrative fit the subject better. I do not believe that I would do an animation for my final major project. I think the stop motion project was one of my weakest pieces of work. I also much enjoyed doing others things in comparison to this and when I do my FMP  I want to ensure that i’m doing something that I like and enjoy because that will help me to have a better outcome. I do not believe that stop motion is best suited to me.
